Volunteers are true heroes. They give of themselves with a joy that reflects the lesson of the Golden Rule, and because of them the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Literally hundreds of outstanding volunteers were nominated this year for J.C. Penney Co.'s Golden Rule Award, but judges - including the Daily News - narrowed the competition down to 12 nominees, who brought family and friends to the annual Golden Rule Awards luncheon held Wednesday at Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys.

The top four honors went to Ruben Hernandez of the Unification of Disabled Latin Americans, Frank Altadonna of the Catalyst Foundation for AIDS Awareness and Care, Lee Seitz of the Polio Survivors Foundation and 13-year-old Nick Heukrodt, who helps with maintenance and youth projects at De Anza Park in Calabasas. Each received a $1,000 contribution to the organization of his or her choice, letters of commendation from President Bill Clinton, Mayor Richard Riordan and other politicos, and a stunning Golden Rule trophy featuring a sculpted sculpt
