PARTY LINES : VAN GOGH ON THE GO; BACK-TO-BACK GALAS CELEBRATE FAMED ARTIST'S RAREST WORKS AT LACMA'S NEWEST VENUE.

A rose is a rose, but sunflowers are, well, soooo van Gogh.

And there were plenty of the sturdy wildflowers adding color to the decor at the opening-night gala for Los Angeles County Museum Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, Calif. The original museum opened in 1913.  spokeswoman Angela Dickson said it turned out to be a two-night affair, with about 1,100 guests on each night. Among the guests in their black-tie best were former California Gov. Pete Wilson and his wife, Gayle, who wore cream instead of black, and Oscar winner Holly Hunter, who wore a sleeveless plum-colored gown. Also attending were Vincent Willem van Gogh, great-grandson of the artist's brother Theo, and the current chairman of the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation; LACMA CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and president Andrea Rich; LACMA director Graham W.J. Beal; and John Leighton, who is the director of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The galas not only provided a preview peek at 70 rarely seen paintings by Vincent van Gogh, but also a first look at the new LACMA West exhibit hall. Locals may recall that the museum's new building is the old May Co. department store, well-known for its exquisite art deco design and also its indoor-outdoor tearoom with a panoramic view of the city. The tearoom remains an eatery, and it was where chefs from Patina (LACMA's official caterer) served guests a chicken and Chilean sea bass dinner, followed by an array of pastries, including Patina's yummy lemon bars.

After the dinner, the exhibit and entertainment by the Doug Norwine Trio, guests were invited to shop at the museum store, where the hot seller was a button that said, ``I saw Van Gogh at LACMA.''

Other van Gogh parties coming up include ``An Evening at LACMA'' on Feb. 6, which is a benefit for Marlborough School in Los Angeles; and California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , Alumni Association's cocktail and dessert reception sponsored by Pacific Bell on Feb. 27.

The van Gogh exhibit, which is sponsored by Washington Mutual, and supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities, has been extended through May 16. For tickets, call (323) 857-6000.

 was the ``Art'' opening-night cast party held Tuesday at Pinot Hollywood, where each room had a different art movement theme. Cocktails were tinted with bright colors, food was served on painters' palettes, and dessert was a huge white cake made to resemble an empty canvas. Hollywood artists in attendance included Sharon Stone, Sean Connery, Minnie Driver, Jason Alexander, Angela Lansbury, Tom Selleck and Melanie Griffith.

The opening-night gala for ``Titanic: A New Musical'' was held at the 75-year-old Regal Biltmore Hotel downtown, where guests such as Martin Landau, Cyd Charisse and Lorraine Toussaint dined on oysters on the half shell, salmon and lamb, which were served on the Titanic the night it sank.
