There's a new venue on the party circuit, and it's right here in the Valley. Instead of Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. They came to admire the newly renovated 73-year-old theater that was home to silent films, talkies, vaudeville, foreign films and rock concerts, and to applaud Hollywood icon Donald O'Connor with the theater's Lifetime Achievement Award. The honoree who starred in ``Singin' in the Rain'' began his career in his family's vaudeville act that took him to several local theaters, including the El Portal. And before the night was over, he got two-time Academy Award-winning composer Joel Hirschhorn to play the piano while he sang a few tunes with the Chris Bennett Trio.

Also honored was Robert Caine, who received the first El Portal Marquee Award from U.S. Congressman Howard Berman and a plaque with city seal from Councilman Joel Wachs for community service. When the dinner bell rang, guests followed the red carpet down the street to a huge tent where they feasted on pasta, roast beef, crab cakes and creme brulee catered by Timmy Nolan's of Toluca Lake.

The event, which raised more than $20,000 for the theater, was organized by Georgean Goldman and David Arthur. Honorary chairmen were Don Loze and Maureen Arthur, and entertainment director was Jim Brochu. For season ticket information, call (818) 508-4200.

While Old Hollywood partied at El Portal, the Fulfillment Fund held its Stars of Tomorrow gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, raising $2.5 million for Los Angeles teens.

The event attracted more than 1,000 guests, and a mini-concert by Stevie Wonder had them literally dancing in the aisles. Also adding to the fun was Steve Martin as master of ceremonies, the Hamilton High School Hamilton High School may refer to:

Back in the Valley, the Assistance League held its annual Tea 'n' Talk party at Alemany High School in Mission Hills.

According to chairwoman Jean Sowers, 360 guests sipped tea and ate scones while watching a fashion show of Hollywood's glamorous past presented by Goodwill Industries of Southern California. The bottom line was $3,000 for Operation School Bell, which provides school clothes and supplies to Valley elementary schools.

The event was organized by Marilyn Gilfenbain, Bobbi Lederman and Julie Harelson, and included a ``Salute to Frank Sinatra'' performed by Diahann Carroll, comedian Mo Nique of TV's ``The Parkers'' and Daily Variety columnist Army Archerd. Sponsors were Cartier, Gelson's markets, and the Harelson family.
