PARTY LINES : MONEY TALKS AT STARS OF TOMORROW GALA.

What a wowie night! Media mogul Rupert Murdoch paid $30,000 for a ballpoint pen, junk-bond king Michael Milken Michael Milken

And that was only the beginning of the Fulfillment Fund's Stars of Tomorrow gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Almost a thousand guests - from Mayor Richard Riordan to still-hunky actor Tony Danza - attended in their most conservative black-tie ensembles.

As usual, there was a silent auction, with numerous items, ranging from a basket of Connie Stevens' Forever Young cosmetics to a pair of Mercedes bikes. And when all the bidding was over, the Fulfillment Fund that provides mentors and scholarships for local youth was $1.5 million richer.

Since the event was all about the stars of tomorrow, the program included plenty of young talent selected by the Los Angeles Music Center The Music Center (officially named the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County) is one of the three largest performing arts centers in the nation. Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Music Center is home to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theater, Mark Taper . Opera singer Laurie Rubin opened the show with some arias that left the crowd speechless ... except for Smits, who said, ``She has the voice of an angel.'' Also performing were flutist Gregory Lawrence, violinist Corinne Chapelle, singer Elna Binckes and jazz pianist Linda Martinez.

At the very end of the evening, Murdoch was presented with the Stars of Tomorrow trophy by his friend and business partner Peter Chernin. ``This is a very humbling experience, to be in the company of such a magnificent body of people ... who have such tremendous faith in the future of America. I thank you from the bottom of my heart,'' Murdoch told the crowd.

Away from the podium, Murdoch told me, ``I'm honored, of course (to receive this award), because education is a high priority ... and the L.A. school district is in trouble.''

After the award presentation, the evening was officially over, and guests fought over the ``Titanic'' videos placed on alternating chairs.

THE VALLEY'S A-LIST turned out in force for the 40th annual Fernando Awards at the Warner Center Mariott Hotel in Woodland Hills. There was so much chatter going on in the lobby that chairwoman Sally Thompson had to announce dinner several times.

Guests, including L.A. Proclaiming Mosher as the ``best of the best,'' the mayor presented the trophy and took a moment to adjust the recipent's bow tie. Mosher, by the way, is president of the San Fernando-based Precision Dynamics Corp.

SOCIAL EVENTS CAN BE EDUCATIONAL, TOO. At the Childrens' Burn Foundation's Healing and Hope luncheon held at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, the lunch bunch heard Dr. Matt Young of the Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks talk about about child abuse by burning. There was also an inspiring speech about surviving burn injuries from Glendale firefighter and local hero Bill Jensen.

The theme of the luncehon was fall fantasy, with purple tulips and pink roses spilling out of gift boxes on the tables where guests dined on chicken with cilantro and ginger dressing, and warm flourless chocolate cake with hazelnut sauce. Party planners were Iris Bovee of Encino and Shirley Fischer of Beverly Hills.
