PARTY LINES : CITY OF HOPE GALA TOO BIG FOR ONE DAY.

Byline: Barbara De Witt De Witt, uninc. town (1990 pop. 8,244), Onondaga co., central N.Y., a residential suburb of Syracuse.

When City of Hope plans a party, it's a two-day affair.

The annual Woman (or Man) of the Year Award luncheon attracts so many of the city's ladies-who-lunch that there's never enough room to squeeze all of them into the Beverly Hilton ballroom in one seating.

One of the main reasons it's a hot ticket is the swell fashion show with clever choreography and novel dance numbers, though the Beverly Hilton's famous Baked Alaska Noun 1. baked Alaska - cake covered with ice cream and meringue browned quickly in an oven

dessert is always a crowd-pleaser, too.

This year 1,200 guests came to see Paramount Pictures executive Christine Essel joke about the huge-and-hefty crystal trophy being ``so modest and subtle'' and her hope that it would help in her next salary negotiations. Then she teared up and talked about her special affinity for the City of Hope and its realistic hope for a cure for the world's most serious diseases, adding that philanthropy starts ``with treating each other kindly, pausing to make someone small feel big.''

After the standard chicken breast lunch and the yummy ice cream dessert, guests were treated to the lavish fashion parade produced by Carin Holmenas and sponsored by Anne and Jack Needleman. Highlights included sassy sas·sy 1

``Finally we're seeing colors and styles that women can really wear,'' whispered fashion arbiter Mr. Blackwell, who was still recovering from throat surgery he'd had three weeks ago.

Besides wearable fashions for men and women, the show had several enthusiastic dance numbers saluting the zoot suit era, the '40s night club scene and the be-boppin' '50s.

While Blackwell critiqued fashions worn by both the guests and models (the man can't help himself), other table talk turned to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County's Natural History Museum.

Besides reminding us that the museum's annual Dinosaur Ball is coming up May 1, museum governor Carole Sumner Krechman said the museum is moving to new digs. A new location hasn't been decided yet.
