PARTY LINES; A NIGHT AT THE OPERA A CHANCE TO SHOW OFF NEW DUDS, ATTITUDES.


It's not the Academy Awards, but for some Angelenos the new opera season marks Day 1 of the fall social calendar. Traditionally, it's the place for certain opera buffs to parade new jewelry, new clothes and (ahem) new paramours while also striking a blow for good taste.

So naturally, the rich and famous (or would-be) were out in force at Wednesday night's L.A. Opera premiere of ``Fedora A free distribution of the Linux kernel from Red Hat along with a variety of open source utilities. Technical support is not provided for any of the Fedora distribution, only for Red Hat's full fee-based subscription of Linux. ,'' starring Maria Ewing and Placido Domingo.

Actress and singer Michelle Phillips, formerly of the Mamas & the Papas, looked California dreamy in a long evening gown and swept-back hair. A devilishly dev·il·ish

 Jon Voight in black tie showed up with daughter Angelina Jolie, who was clad in a stylishly asymmetrical black cocktail dress. They looked fab, but we were wondering, Jon, what was with that long white scarf? Have you checked the thermometer lately?

In contrast, Hugh Hefner's ex-flame, Barbi Benton, looked cool as a cucumber in a very tight, off-the-shoulder number with a cheekily high hemline hem·line
