PARQUE BACK ON TRACK TO BIGS.

Byline: CHRIS COCOLES The Minors

He's pitched well his past three games but is only 1-2 during the stretch. For Jim Parque James Vo Parque (born February 8, 1976 in Norwalk, California) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who pitched for the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1998 to 2003. , nothing is easy anymore.

two years ago stunted his progress and affected his velocity.

However, things look bright again: Parque is with a new organization, Tampa Bay, has regained his health and is pitching well enough for Triple-A Durham (N.C.) that he could earn a ticket back to Tropicana Field soon.

The former first-round pick has allowed four earned runs over 20 1/3 innings, losing twice for lack of support before finally breaking through with seven shutout innings to beat Richmond (Va.) on Thursday night.

``I think I've given up (seven) earned runs in my last 35 innings and got three losses and one win,'' Parque told the Durham Herald-Sun after evening his record at 5-5 and dropping his ERA to 3.72.

``But I've been keeping my team in the ballgame. The velocity's starting to come and my pitches are getting sharper. I'm almost back to my pre-surgery days.''

After his operation, Parque's fastball was clocked in the low-80-mph range. Throwing with less gusto than he's accustomed was reflected in the high ERAs he carried at Triple-A Charlotte (6.47) and in his brief call-up with the Chicago White Sox (9.95 with a 1-4 record) before he signed a free-agent contract with the Devil Rays.

Parque began the season on the big-league staff but lasted just two starts, losing to Boston (five innings, seven earned runs) and getting roughed up against Baltimore (1 2/3 innings, six runs).

The Devil Rays like what they've seen since Parque was sent back to the minors. With 30 big-league wins, including 29 his first three seasons, he's already a proven commodity at that level. And he hasn't let the post-surgery drop in speed affect his desire to get back.

``He competes,'' Durham manager Bill Evers said.
