SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The city's two regional parks face more than $40 million in expansions in the next five years, with plans on the table for a new gym, a pool, a park where dogs can run off their leashes and a redesigned skate park.

A draft budget and a five-year capital plan being reviewed by the Santa Clarita City Council include $23.2 million in major additions at Central Park and $17.2 million to expand the city's George Caravalho Sports Complex.

Fourteen acres of the sports complex are set for projects that will include relocating the existing skate park to the northeast corner of the 70-acre facility, adding a multipurpose mul·ti·pur·pose

The new gym will back up to the existing one so the two can share locker rooms, a cost-saving move, Gould said.

If the current draft budget is approved, the sports complex likely will house the city's first dog park, which will cover about an acre, he said. Other plans include two outdoor basketball courts and additional parking. A final phase on the drawing board but not considered in the upcoming budget is two more fields, a BMX BMX

"By the time it's finished it'll have the full gamut from open space at trails to a 50-meter pool," Gould said.

The draft budget includes $23.2 million for design and construction of the park's third phase -- now proposed as a recreation center, gym, pool, outdoor basketball area and cross-country trails on the park's perimeter.

A second dog park also is being considered there.
