PARKER NAMED KROGER PRESIDENT IN COLUMBUS

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) announced today that William D. Parker, currently president of the company's Dallas Marketing Area, has been promoted to president of the Columbus Marketing Area.
Parker will succeed Robert L. Shafer, who will serve as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Columbus Marketing Area until his retirement at the end of the year. Shafer has been president of the Columbus Division since 1986.
Joseph A. Pichler, Kroger's chairman and chief executive officer, described Parker as one of the company's most capable operating and merchandising executives. "Bill has done an outstanding job for Kroger in Dallas during a period of tremendous challenge in one of the nation's most competitive supermarket environments," Pichler said. "In coming to Columbus, Bill is succeeding, in Bob Shafer, a very talented executive who has served the Columbus market with exceptional skill and distinction. We are excited that Bill will continue this high level of performance and use his strong leadership talents to guide one of the company's oldest and most important operating divisions."
Parker, 56, joined Kroger in 1956 as a meat cutter in Indianapolis. He has served in a variety of positions in the company, and became vice president of the Nashville (Tenn.) Division in 1983, a year before becoming vice president-meat merchandising at Kroger's headquarters in Cincinnati. Early in 1988, Parker became vice president of the company's Florida Choice Division. Later that year, after the Florida Choice Division was divested as part of the company's financial restructuring, he was named vice president (later president) of Kroger's division in Memphis, Tenn. In November 1990, he was promoted to be president of Kroger's 80-store Dallas Marketing Area.
Shafer joined Kroger in 1961 as a management trainee in Columbus. From 1984-86, he was vice president of the company's Louisville (Ky.) Marketing Area, before returning to Columbus as vice president (later president) of the division.
The Columbus Marketing Area operates 95 Kroger Food Stores in Columbus, Toledo and smaller cities in central and eastern Ohio and a portion of West Virginia.
