PARK WORK UNDER WAY COMPLETION SET IN AUGUST.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

ROSAMOND - An east side park in the planning stages for years is expected to be completed in August.

Construction is under way on the 10-acre park on United Street north of Rosamond Boulevard. The $169,000 park will be bare-bones - grass, possibly a couple of playing fields, water fountains and portable toilets A portable toilet is a modern, portable, self-contained outhouse manufactured of molded plastic in a variety of colors and are often used as a temporary toilet for construction sites and large social gatherings. .

``Outside of getting the grass to grow, it's up in the air as to what will be out there,'' said Sharon Welker, secretary-treasurer of the Rosamond Community Services District, which is financing the park.

Developer Kaufman and Broad offered to put in a park more than a decade ago as an amenity a·men·i·ty

The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County officials said there was no money to provide for its upkeep.

The park is being financed by revenue the district receives from Kern County property tax. The district typically receives between $100,000 and $130,000 annually from Kern County.

In November 1998, voters approved ballot measures giving the district the power to run parks in the unincorporated Adj. 1. unincorporated - not organized and maintained as a legal corporation

Supporters had sought $2.50 per parcel per year for graffiti abatement and up to $45 per parcel annually for parks and recreation services.

Rosamond has a park, now the responsibility of the county, plus public tennis courts and a swimming pool, built as part of a housing development on the community's west side.
