``We come here to play,'' Irene Alvarez said Thursday, as she rested with her year-old son Joshua Lopez in the ample shade of one of the park's many trees. ``It's nice, here. It could use some work though.''

Val Verde Park is the center of this canyon town northwest of Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, . It was built in the 1930s by the Works Project Administration, a Depression-era federal agency that put people to work on public projects. The centerpiece of the park is a newly reconstructed Olympic-size pool, originally built for African-Americans, who at the time were prohibited from using public parks in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area. The community grew around that park, now the town's gathering spot.

Val Verde is evolving, growing at its own slow pace, and the park remains an oasis, filled with mature trees and plenty to do.

``I like the area,'' Eric Wochna said as he strolled through the park. Wochna, who lives in Northridge, is building a home in Val Verde.

By the time he's settled, the softball field at the park will be regraded and revamped as a multisports field, and the basketball court with its uneven surface and faded remnants of graffiti will be refurbished. The tennis courts, too, will get a new surface and the frayed net will be replaced.

What won't be touched are the scores of trees that shade the park, the charming stone retaining walls and the grassy picnic grounds that are much the same as they were seven decades ago.
