LANCASTER -- In a bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries.  ceremony Friday, the city of Lancaster The City of Lancaster (2002 population: 133,914) is a local government district with city status in Lancashire, England. Its main town is Lancaster, from which it obtained its city status. Other towns in the district include Morecambe, Heysham, Slyne, and Carnforth.  rededicated Eastside Park Eastside Park is a residential neighborhood in the Eastside of Paterson, New Jersey east of downtown. Once the home of the city's industrial and political leaders, the neighborhood experienced a significant downturn as industry fled Paterson.  in the name of Pierre W. Bain, a sheriff's motorcycle deputy killed on duty in a traffic collision.

On the first anniversary of his death, city officials, deputies and Bain's family and friends gathered at the park at Avenue I and Fifth Street East for the unveiling of a sign with the new name. Among those in attendance were Bain's parents, Orville and Germaine, his wife, Diana, and one of his three daughters from a previous marriage, Alicia.

"I've been thrilled about this since I heard about it," Diana Bain said. "I want everybody who drives by here to remember his life."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is a local law enforcement agency that serves Los Angeles County, California.
 veteran who died two days before his 46th birthday, was riding after a speeder when another vehicle pulled in front of his motorcycle at an east Lancaster intersection.

"It's a hurt that never truly heals," said Capt. Carl Deeley, commander of the Lancaster sheriff's station. "To each of us, it's helping with the healing process knowing his service is being honored in this way."

After graduating from Los Angeles Baptist High School Los Angeles Baptist High School is a Christian, independent, coeducational day school located in Sepulveda, California with approximately 962 students enrolled in grades 7 through 12. , Bain worked in his father's machine shop and thought about becoming a forest ranger before opting for the Sheriff's Department.

 and for a good-natured, outgoing personality that let him win over even motorists he stopped to ticket, his friends said.

"Pierre had a rare gift, one we wish we all had; he never lost that childlike quality that lets you celebrate life," Deeley said.

The Lancaster motorcycle deputies called Bain "Pepe," both for his fondness for hot sauce and because of the French cartoon skunk skunk, name for several related New World mammals of the weasel family, characterized by their conspicuous black and white markings and use of a strong, highly offensive odor for defense.  Pepe Le Pew. They also called him "Mr. 723," the Sheriff's Department code for giving a warning.

"By naming this park in his honor we are keeping his memory alive in our community," Vice Mayor Ed Sileo said.
