PARK EVENTS TO FOCUS ON FAMILY, FITNESS.

A weekly fitness run, campfire talks, a junior ranger program The Ranger program was a series of unmanned space missions by the United States in the 1960s whose objective was to obtain the first close-up images of the surface of the Moon.  and nature photography walks will start this month.

Saddleback Butte State Park Saddleback Butte State Park is a state park located in southern California's Antelope Valley. The prominent feature of this park is Saddleback Butte, a butte that measures 3,651 feet (1,113 m) high. The park covers about 2,955 acres (11.  is at Avenue J and 170th Street East. Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodlands State Park is on Lancaster Road at 210th Street West.

Among the activities:

Fitness challenge run, Sundays at 8 a.m. at Saddleback Butte campground. The three-mile course includes running in sand and on a dirt road.

Health hike, Sundays at 9 a.m. at Saddleback Butte campground. The hike passes through Joshua trees and creosote creosote (krē`əsōt), volatile, heavy, oily liquid obtained by the distillation of coal tar or wood tar. Creosote derived from beechwood tar has been used medicinally as an antiseptic and in the treatment of chronic bronchitis.  bushes on a slight incline, then climbs steeply up the rocky hill. Water and snacks will be offered at the top.

Campfire, Saturdays at 7 p.m. starting Oct. 28 at Saddleback Butte campground. Rangers will talk about topics including Mojave Desert animals and astronomy.

Nature photography, 10 a.m. to noon every other Saturday, starting this week at Ripley Desert Woodlands.

Junior ranger program, 10 a.m. to noon every other Saturday, starting Oct. 28 at Saddleback Butte visitor center. Crafts and activities are offered for youngsters age 7 to 12. Cost to cover supplies is $3 a child, or a $10 punch card for four programs.

Two one-time events are also scheduled:

Orionid meteor shower and astronomy campfire program, 7 p.m. Saturday at Saddleback Butte campground. Campfire talk will be on constellations and the mythology behind them. Early morning is best to see the annual meteor shower.

Halloween family night, 5 o'clock Oct. 29 at Saddleback Butte campground. A potluck barbecue, ghost stories around the campfire and gifts for youngsters are planned.
