CANYON COUNTRY - Twenty to 30 La Mesa La Mesa (lə mā`sə), city (1990 pop. 52,931), San Diego co., S Calif., a suburb of San Diego; inc. 1912. It is a retail center and a popular residence for upper- and middle-income professionals in the San Diego area.  Junior High students bring sack lunches each Tuesday to hear guest speakers discuss law, nursing and other careers.

The brainchild of computer keyboarding teacher Jackie Bialas, the brown-bag lunch series has featured speakers from the Sheriff's Department, the Placerita Canyon Nature Center, the armed services The Constitution authorizes Congress to raise, support, and regulate armed services for the national defense. Parents of La Mesa students have also described their careers.

``Last year we had a major career fair with about 100 parents participating, but we just didn't have the funds for a major event this year, so I came up with the lunch idea,'' Bialas said. ``We can actually expose the kids to a lot of careers in just half an hour each week.''

Bialas tries to find people with careers that interest junior high students, such as work in law enforcement and in the care of wild or exotic animals.

At the beginning of the school year, she sent a letter to La Mesa parents, inviting them to visit.

Sonny Wise, an attorney, and Christine Amstutz, a nurse, are two of the parents who have taken Bialas up on her offer.

``The kids really liked (Williams) because he had started out for the city as a lifeguard and had worked his way up. That was something they could relate to,'' Bialas said.

The students also enjoyed visits from Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  sheriff's deputies and Army and Navy representatives.

``But the Fire Department is coming soon, so I'm sure that will take over as everyone's favorite,'' Bialas said.

The school is also planning talks from veterinarians Veterinarians and veterinary surgeons (vets) are medical professionals who operate exclusively on animals. Well-known and notable veterinarians include:
