PARENTS SCUTTLE PLANS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICT TO START YEAR IN AUGUST.

Byline: Marci Wormser Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Parents' complaints resulted in the Palmdale School District The Palmdale School District is a school district that serves a major part of the city of Palmdale, California (USA).

The Palmdale School District was first formed in 1888. Approximately 28,000 students are enrolled in the Palmdale School District.

Under the revised proposal, the school year will begin Sept. 2, and students would be given two weeks' vacation in winter, one week in spring and one week at Thanksgiving Thanksgiving

``The Calendar Committee got some bad responses from parents,'' Smith said.

The district will take public comments until March 21, when the schedule is expected to be adopted in its final form, Smith said.

The new calendar will reduce state funding by a couple hundred thousand dollars from the previous plan, Smith said. However, administrators had not been counting on the extra money in working on the district's tight budget, she said.

On March 1, district administrators proposed starting the new school year Aug. 18 and lengthening lengthening (lengkˑ·the·ning),

The district also proposed the extension of Thanksgiving vacation to a full week because 40 percent of students are absent the day before Thanksgiving.

The large absences of students after the winter and spring holidays cause the district to lose substantial state funding based on attendance, officials said.

Parents requested the extra vacation days during winter and spring, Smith said. But after the new schedule was released, administrators received complaints about children having to return to school in August.

The school-schedule change came after the district, in a cost-cutting move, decided to eliminate the present ``three-track'' schedule. That schedule has several shorter breaks that put pupils in and out of school at different times.
