PARAMOUNT UNVEILS PLANS TO PRODUCE 'THE UNTOUCHABLES'
AND 'STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE' SYNDICATED TV SERIES
NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Paramount Pictures today unveiled plans to launch two new, first-run, hour-long dramatic series for syndication: a new version of the legendary series, "The Untouchables" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," the newest series incarnation of the highly successful Star Trek franchise.
The announcement was made by Kerry McCluggage, president of the Paramount Television Group, at a press conference held here in conjunction with the National Association of Television Program Executives Conference.
Production is slated to begin in June on an initial 20 episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and 18 episodes of "The Untouchables" for the first season. Both series will be distributed by Paramount Domestic Television and produced by Paramount Network Television, and each is scheduled to debut in January 1993, with a two-hour premiere movie. Twenty-six episodes of both series are planned for each subsequent season, beginning with Fall '93. Both series are planned to be filmed at Paramount's soundstages in Hollywood, while "The Untouchables" will blend backlot shooting with location shooting throughout various potential midwest and eastern United States locations.
"'The Untouchables' is one of the best crime-fighting franchises that exists, while Star Trek redefined the science fiction genre and is arguably the most visionary space drama ever conceived," McCluggage said. "These properties are two of Paramount's crown jewels, and the new series will be true to the quality of their predecessors while living up to the expectations of today's audiences."
According to Paramount Domestic Television President Steve Goldman, stations such as XETV (San Diego), KCPO (Seattle) and the Paramount Stations Group are among the first stations to commit to carry one or both of the new series. "We have been talking to stations about our desire to offer these series and the response has been overwhelmingly positive and extremely enthusiastic. As a result, we expect to announce a significant number of deals by week's end and overall are expecting an extremely high percentage of the country cleared for both series' debut."
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" was created and will be executive produced by "Star Trek: The Next Generation's" Executive Producers Rick Berman and Michael Piller, while "The Untouchables" will be executive produced by highly acclaimed writer/producer/director Christopher Crowe. Crowe has developed and produced numerous network series, including "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" for NBC, directed for the award-winning television series "Miami Vice" and is currently directing his own screenplay titled "Sessions," an upcoming theatrical release for Paramount Pictures. Casting has not yet begun for either series.
"The Untouchables" will be set in Chicago in the 1930s. Paramount Network Television President John Pike stated that the new series will blend elements of the hit theatrical movie with those of the popular original television show. "Like the original series, we will have a narrator for style and pacing, but unlike the original, the new stories will not be told from the criminal's point of view, but will focus instead on our heroes' perspectives and their personal lives, featuring Eliot Ness," Pike said.
Set in the 24th century, the same time as "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the new series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" follows the adventures of a new team of Starfleet officers who take command of a remote alien space station situated near a newly discovered wormhole ... a shortcut through space that has become one of the most strategic locations in the galaxy.
"If, as Gene Roddenberry often said, 'Star Trek' is 'Wagon Train' in space, then 'Deep Space Nine' can be compared to a wild west town on the edge of the frontier with all the excitement and adventure that kind of locale can generate," said Piller.
Added Berman, "Setting 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' during the same time as 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' will allow an exchange of characters and occasional story lines between each show."
Both new series are being offered on a barter basis for the initial primetime airing, with a cash backend. In the barter run, seven minutes will be retained for national sale by Premier Advertising Sales.
