PARAMOUNT PUBLISHING JOINS THE INTERNET

NEW YORK, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ Paramount Publishing's Higher Education Division has connected to the Internet, it was announced today by Jonathan Newcomb, president of Paramount Publishing.
The Internet, the core of the national "data superhighway," a network of large academic, corporate, and government computers linked by high-speed phone lines, reaches most technology companies and over 90 percent of four-year colleges and universities.
"Most of our university authors and corporate customers worldwide are already on the Internet," said Seth Reichlin, Vice President of Instructional Technology and Market Research for Paramount's Higher Education Group, "so it made good sense to advance with this technology and join the Internet community."
"It's great that the publishing industry is going electronic," said Andrew Tanenbaum, Professor of Computer Science at the Free University of Amsterdam. "Many people like the idea of being able to get information quickly on line, and up-to-date information about books and other published material is a valuable service."
The Internet will enable Paramount Publishing's Higher Education units, including Prentice Hall and Allyn and Bacon, to accept manuscripts and distribute book catalogs, chapters, and educational software supplements in electronic form. In addition, the Internet will be used to accept book orders from individual computer users worldwide. By the fourth quarter of 1993, Paramount plans to ship books electronically over the network. The publishing group also plans to extend the Internet to include all of its operating units.
Paramount Publishing, the publishing operation of Paramount Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCI), has significant operations serving the consumer and business, technical and professional markets and is America's leading publisher of educational materials. Paramount Communications Inc. is a global entertainment and publishing company.
