PARAGON CABLE OF SAN ANTONIO ORDERS SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT FOR 4,500 MILE UPGRADE WITH VARIABLE-FITT

ATLANTA, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Paragon Cable of San Antonio, a wholly owned subsidiary of KBLCOM Corp., has ordered $1.4 million in distribution equipment from Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) to upgrade its 4,500-mile plant to 550 MHz with a base for further expansion to 750 MHz.
Paragon has indicated that it anticipates its needs may reach a total of $10 million in Scientific-Atlanta distribution products over the next five years.
The upgrade will use Variable-FITT (Forward Intermediate Terminating Trunk) architecture, Scientific-Atlanta's design that allows operators to save as much existing cable as possible while retaining bridger locations, with minimal down time and re-splicing.
"Using Scientific-Atlanta's Variable-FITT architecture, we can accomplish a major bandwidth expansion with minimum down time and inconvenience to our customers," said Bill Prestridge, vice president of engineering at Paragon Cable. "Scientific-Atlanta had the products on the shelf, available now. Other vendors' alternatives were not as flexible and did not meet our end of line performance objectives."
To provide significantly increased channel capacity and improve reliability and signal quality, Paragon is ordering advanced Scientific-Atlanta distribution equipment including System Amplifier IIs and Line Extender IIs.
The System Amplifier II (SA II) from Scientific-Atlanta which make it easy to install, upgrade and service. At the heart of the SA II is an upgradeable and reversible integrated amplifier module.
This unitized module inserts in a new, improved 1.5 GHz housing design and provides the operator with maximum flexibility in future bandwidth upgrades and architectures.
Scientific-Atlanta's Line Extender II (LE II) features a high efficiency, transformerless power supply that offers significantly lower power bills for operators. Also, the LE II offers an optional Automatic Gain Control (AGC) which is cost-efficient and allows longer cascades of line extenders.
Paragon will increase the number of channels available to its 245,000 subscribers to 61 from 45. More channels will be added in the future.
"This order and others demonstrate that the Variable-FITT architecture and our advanced products are a cost-effective solution to increase bandwidth in an upgrade environment," said Robert McIntyre, president of the Transmission Systems Division of the Broadband Communications Group.
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. is a world leader in broadband communications systems, cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
