PALMDALE Palmdale, city (1990 pop. 68,842), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the irrigated Antelope Valley; a growing residential suburb of Los Angeles near Little Rock Creek where it forms Lake Palmdale Reservoir, inc. 1962.  - City officials are asking residents for ideas for Palmdale's 2007 Tournament of Roses parade The Tournament of Roses Parade was established, and first held, on January 1,1890, in Pasadena, California, eight miles (13 km) northeast of Downtown Los Angeles.

Rooted in tradition, this parade is broadcast on multiple television networks, watched by upwards of one
 float.

Float ideas must fit in with the parade's theme of ``Our Good Nature,'' and the person who provides the winning idea will receive two tickets for grandstand seats for the Jan. 1 parade in Pasadena Pasadena (păs'ədē`nə).

trying to get themes and concepts,'' said city administrator Laura Biery, who is overseeing the project. ``It doesn't have to be much, just a couple of sentences. We can take it from there.''

Ideas need to be submitted to the city by 5:30 p.m. May 1. The ideas can be submitted online at the city's Web site, cityofpalmdale.org.

The ``Our Good Nature'' theme can be taken as meaning Mother Nature or people's good-hearted nature or a combination of both.

The city's 2006 entry, ``A Magical Place to Call Home,'' played off the city's annual Fall Festival. Float designer Raul Rodriguez incorporated the festival's fairies and a cornucopia cornucopia (kôr'nykō`pēə), in Greek mythology, magnificent horn that filled itself with whatever meat or drink its owner requested.  into its design.

Ideas will be reviewed by a committee. The winning ideas will be referred to Rodriguez in mid-May.

The city plans to have the same budget for the float as the 2006 entry, $150,000. The float will also be the same length, 35 feet.

The city will be looking to increase the private donations for the project, Biery said. Last year, donors provided about $84,000 in cash and in-kind services. The city is aiming to increase that amount by $10,000.

The donations were used to support the volunteers, who numbered well over 600. That support included underwriting Underwriting

much of the cost for busing them to the float construction site in Duarte, providing T-shirts, meals and prizes.

City officials envision the parade as a yearly tradition for Palmdale with future floats being entirely underwritten by donations.

The floats help the city by generating a positive buzz in the media as well as building community pride, officials say.

City officials believe they scored on both accounts with the 2006 entry, citing the large number of volunteers and extensive media coverage that included more than 20 newspaper articles about the float prior to the parade, television coverage from seven Los Angeles-based news stations, and coverage from two cable channels.
