``Last year, people didn't get their cherries,'' Hobart said. ``But the crop this year is good, and we'll see larger crowds.''

``I started the `you-pick' cherry orchards,'' Hobart said. ``It's been growing ever since.''

Hobart said the Leona Valley cherry orchards and the you-pick cherry season were featured on national television, which is expected to increase crowds this year.

``I've been coming here for 30 years,'' said Gene Gobat, 72, of Mar Vista Hills. ``This year, I bought $30 worth of cherries. I usually give them to my friends and neighbors.''

Before heading to Paradise Cherry Picking, Jeanne Jordan, 39, of Newhall and her two sons watched the Leona Valley Cherry Festival parade.

Jordan, who has lived in Newhall for 15 years, said this is the first time she has come to the festival. ``I wanted to come pick cherries, so I thought we could make a day of it,'' she said.

Before watching the parade, the three spent time at the arts and crafts fair and bought stone necklaces and shiny rocks.

``This is great,'' Jordan said. ``It's really nice to be able to see the festival and get the small-town feeling. Everyone's so friendly.''

Greg Weil, 36, of Leona Valley has come to the parade for five years ever since he moved to the valley. This year, he and his wife watched as their 11-year-old daughter carried a banner in the parade.

``Everybody comes out for the parade,'' Weil said. ``It's such a community event. It kicks off cherry season. It's one of the things that makes Leona Valley special.''
