Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team was not born when the Spirits started their string of 18 consecutive league championships.

Still, the tradition continues.

On Friday, Paraclete (19-4) clinched the High Desert League title, defeating Bishop 5-0 to improve to 8-0.

The Spirits, winners of 14 in a row, played Kern Valley on Tuesday. They will close out the regular season Friday against Rosamond. At stake will be a chance to finish league play undefeated for the 11th time in 18 years.

``I think it's awesome,'' Nessa said.

``The games are getting tougher, but we continue to get stronger. I hope we can keep on winning for another 18 years.''

Paraclete's championship streak already has gone unmatched by any school in state history.

The Spirits, who have a league record of 171-7 over the past 18 years, hold the state record for most consecutive league championships in softball, according to according to

This season has been no exception.

McKay, Nessa and Ament are among seven Paraclete players who were members of the 1994 Quartz Hill Little League all-star team that came within a game of reaching the Little League softball World Series.

``We stayed together through the high pressure,'' Linda Ament said. ``I think playing together for so long has helped.''

Critics have pointed to the weakness of the High Desert League as a factor in Paraclete's dominance. Paraclete, however, has shown it can compete against the Southern Section's top teams.

The Spirits finished fourth in the High Desert Classic and won the Paraclete Tournament, defeating Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the final. Paraclete, the No. 3 team in the Southern Section Division V rankings, also has defeated Quartz Hill, Highland and Ridgecrest Burroughs of the Golden League as well as Alemany and Victor Valley.

``We play a tough schedule,'' Neill said. ``We may not play in the strongest league but everybody plays their best against us because of the streak.''

Paraclete would like to end a streak of its own when the Southern Section playoffs begin next week. The Spirits have lost five consecutive times in the division championship after advancing to the final in 1980, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1993.

``It's kind of a joke,'' Neill said. ``Everybody asks, `How do you feel?' You always lose. A lot of teams don't make it to the finals. To get there is an honor, but I sure want to win one. I think there is a lot of versatility on this team and a lot of speed. We've been focusing on the league title and the team is peaking right now.''
