PAR Technology reports the award of dual-use technology transfer contract.

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 1995--PAR Technology Corp. (NYSE:PTC) today reports that it has been awarded a contract from Rome Laboratory to develop a new, state-of-the-art information discovery and retrieval software application knowns as Wide Integrated Network Graphical Search (WINGS) for the U.S. Government and for commercial use.

According to Rome Labs sources, this program enhances the Document Content Analysis and Retrieval System (DCARS), a concept-based information retrieval system that is currently being developed for the National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC). PAR's INSIGHT and HAWKEYE software products augment DCARS by incorporating unique and complementary information processing technologies to accelerate the identification of information and convey critical information about the documents contents without users actually having to read the documents.

The program is part of the New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation's (NYSTEC) effort to promote "dual use" technology which benefits the Department of Defense and the commercial sector. Robert Roberts, Acting Director of NYSTEC, explained that, "through initial New York State funding, NYSTEC was created with the mission to promote the use of Rome Lab's `dual use' technology by commercial businesses." He continued, "NYSTEC was created to assist New York State businesses to expand into new high technology fields with the ultimate goal, to produce jobs." Roberts went on to say, "this program is the first commercial effort by NYSTEC, and it is exemplary of how NYSTEC is already achieving its mission."

John W. PAR's software applications, developed under contract for various departments of the U.S. Government, utilize N-Gram technology and are able to: profile the contents of existing textual databases; cluster the contents by related keyword topics; evaluate the effectiveness of query terms and overall queries; cluster a list of retrieved documents by similarity of topic; and facilitate query refinement by suggesting related query terms. Sammon concluded, "Market research has shown that there is a rapidly growing worldwide market for electronic document retrieval and analysis and with NYSTEC sponsorship we will create an advanced product with government and commercial applications."
