Other top entrants tonight include Thousand Oaks High's Kim Mortensen, Simi Valley's Ryan Meuse, Newbury Park's Brock brock n. Chiefly British A badger. [Middle English brok, from Old English broc, of Celtic origin.] Diediker and Sharika Higgins of Channel Islands. Besides Mortensen, Higgins is the dominant female athlete in the league. She owns the sprints and could win as many as four individual titles tonight. At last week's Ventura County Championships at Camarillo, Higgins won the 100-meter dash, 200 and 400. Meuse, who is a sophomore, will be going for the first league titles of his career. He is the area leader in the 800-meter run but will double in the 400 where he will battle fellow sophomore Matt Lea of Camarillo. Lea is the defending Marmonte League champion in the 400. However, tonight will probably be Lea's final opportunity to race against Meuse. Meuse most likely will focus on the 800 for next week's Southern Section Division I preliminaries at Long Beach City College. ``That (400 and 800) is just too tough a double,'' said Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. coach Chuck Gustafson. ``I will have him drop the 400 and concentrate on the 800.'' Diediker has been throwing well over the past few weeks and will try to win the league title in the shot put. He won his second consecutive county title last week. The most highly anticipated races of the night will involve Mortensen, not because she's expected to run fast or that she is supposed have a close battle against a specific rival, but because no one knows what she might do. Breaking any records, however, is unlikely because Mortensen will be running in the three events - 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Last week she broke the area record in the 3,200 with a time of 10 minutes, 7.10 seconds, moving ahead of Alemany's Vicke Cook (10:11.42, 1981). Mortensen also moved into No. 6 on the all-time national list and, if conditions are favorable, could become the first prep athlete ever to run under 10 minutes in the 3,200 outdoors. Mortensen doesn't believe in worrying about her times, which fits Farrell's philosophy perfectly. ``I think that's good,'' Mortensen said. ``I don't put any pressure on myself.'' ``I don't believe in that stuff, especially with young kids,'' Farrell said. ``It's really an unusual burden to put on a 15- or 16-year-old kid. It's more important to do the training.'' The Marmonte League is the only league in the area whose finals count toward the league title. |
