PANTHERS PLAGUED BY WRESTLING INJURIES.Byline: Darnell Felton Special to the Daily News With league wrestling finals scheduled for the first week of February, Newbury Park High Schoolcoach Marty Maciel's early season hopes are sinking under the weight of injuries on the team. Newbury Park is led by senior Tim Bond (145 pounds). "Bond puts a lot of pressure on his opponents," Maciel said. "He's very good at throws and upper and lower body attacks." Dan Omoto (112), designated by Maciel as the team's most-improved wrestler, injured his back at the Newbury Park tournament on Dec. 2. He was expected to return to action last Thursday when Newbury Park competed against Agoura. One of the Panthers' bright spots has been Mike Palmer (130 pounds) who is off to a 5-2 start. "(Palmer) is pound-for-pound the best wrestler I have," Maciel said. But Palmer also has been limited because of injuries. He had knee surgery during the Christmas break and returned for the Atascadero tournament, only to pull a muscle in his sternum sternum: see rib. . Palmer's status is day-by-day at this point. Last year's league champion at 189 pounds - junior Garrett Hobba - hasn't come out for the team yet. He bruised bruise v. bruised, bruis·ing, bruis·es v.tr. 1. a. Maciel had projected Hobba to win a Southern Section championship this year. David Tully was supposed to wrestle at 152 pounds for the Panthers this season. But Tully, a member of the Newbury Park football team, broke his leg in the semifinal game against Westlake and will be lost for the year. "This has been an unbelievable year for injuries," Maciel said. "I've never had this many injuries in my 12 years of coaching." A bright spot for Newbury Park has been freshman Mike Brems (103), one-third of a set of triplets who wrestle for the Panthers. His brothers - David and Jared - wrestle in the 112-pound division. The Brems trio moved here last year from Indiana, and Mike (23-4) has set the Marmonte League on fire. "He has a great attitude and is very confident," Maciel said. "He's a brawler brawl n. 1.
