PANEL STARTS CITY SEARCH COMMUNITY GROUP TO HELP SELECT MANAGER.

Byline: Heather MacDonald Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The City Council on Tuesday unanimously appointed 16 community members to an ad-hoc committee that will help select Santa Clarita's next city manager.

Although some of the panel members are well-known, most are active behind the scenes or are frequent volunteers who have served Santa Clarita in many different capacities.

``We chose these people to try to keep politics out of the process and make the committee as broad-based as possible, in order to represent the community as best it can,'' said Councilwoman Marsha McLean.

Councilmen Bob Kellar and Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited.

Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he
were not present at the meeting. Mayor Frank Ferry and Councilwoman Laurene Weste joined McLean in voting to form the panel.

The quest to find a new city manager has been narrowed to six remaining candidates, including interim City Manager Ken Pulskamp.

Several committee members said Tuesday they were surprised and honored to have been tapped and eager to question the candidates about their ability to cope with a myriad of issues facing Santa Clarita, including the need for new roads and schools.

``We need to get the redevelopment effort moving faster,'' said Raul Bojorquez, the owner of El Trocadero Steak House steak house or steak·house

The committee will advise the council on the selection of two or three finalists and on the ultimate choice, which is expected to be made before Christmas, officials said.

The City Council and the ad-hoc committee's discussions about hiring a new city manager are exempt from the state's open meeting law, which allows municipalities to make hiring and firing decisions in private.

Former City Manager George Caravalho left Santa Clarita for the top job in the Inland Empire city of Riverside in April after a bruising year that was marked by tension between the City Council and the city staff.
