PANEL HONORS FORMER COUNCILMAN BOARD OF SUPERVISORS PRESENTS AWARDS TO 100 FOR OLDER AMERICANS DAY.

PALMDALE - Former City Councilman Joseph P. Davies was among nearly 100 senior citizens honored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is the five member governing board of Los Angeles County, California. Members of the board of supervisors are elected by district, the current members as of April 2006 are:
  • District 1: Gloria Molina, Democrat
 during the 36th observance of Older Americans Day.

A May 9 luncheon featured classical music performances on piano and harp at the Grand Hall of the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The supervisors and the County Commission on Aging jointly sponsor the annual celebration, which is coordinated by the county Department of Community and Senior Services.

``Joe touches the lives of everyone he meets,'' said Palmdale Councilman Jim Root, who nominated Davies, a councilman from 1988 to 1999. ``He teaches us what it means to be a civic leader.''

All of the honorees were recognized at the luncheon for their contributions to their communities and their dedication to senior issues. The 93 Older Americans Day honorees were nominated by officials in local cities and in senior citizens centers.

Davies, 78, came to Palmdale in 1962 when he was assigned to Air Force Plant 42 as the operations officer. Davies became commander of Plant 42 the following year and stayed until 1967, when he was sent to Vietnam.

Raised in Oklahoma, Davies spent 30 years in the Army Air Force and Air Force. He flew bombers and transport planes.

After a tour in Vietnam and four years in Denver, Davies returned to Palmdale in 1973. When he retired from the Air Force, Davies took a job as the customer service and community representative for what was then North American North American

Davies worked on the B-1B bomber program, and later on the space shuttle space shuttle, reusable U.S. space vehicle. Developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), it consists of a winged orbiter, two solid-rocket boosters, and an external tank.  program, before retiring from the company in 1992.

In 1988, Davies was elected to his first of three terms on the Palmdale City Council. He retired in 1999.
