Why did you pick a career in zoology zoology, branch of biology concerned with the study of animal life. From earliest times animals have been vitally important to man; cave art demonstrates the practical and mystical significance animals held for prehistoric man.  (the study of animals)? I was fascinated by animals as a child. After graduating college, I volunteered at the Insect Zoo at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Then I heard about job opportunities at the National Zoo.

What do you do every day on the job? I manage the budget for animals and their habitats, keep tabs on animals' health, and supervise zookeepers. I'm both a scientist and a manager.

What does it take to work in a zoo? Zoo curators need a degree in the biological sciences and zoo experience. Zookeepers must have at least a high school diploma A high school diploma is a diploma awarded for the completion of high school. In the United States and Canada, it is considered the minimum education required for government jobs and higher education. An equivalent is the GED.  and some animal-care training. I volunteered during college at veterinary clinics, worked in pet stores, trapped field mice This article is about the fictional creatures from Oz. For types of real-life rodents, see field mouse. For the band, see The Field Mice.

The Field Mice are fictional intelligent creatures — field mice — that live just outside the Emerald City of the
for a graduate student, and assisted at a riding stable. It's important to be comfortable with all animals.

How does the future look for zoo workers? Zoo professions combine animal care, conservation, research, and education. But the professional market is small. There are only about 400 accredited accredited

recognition by an appropriate authority that the performance of a particular institution has satisfied a prestated set of criteria.

Thanks, Lisa! Depending on a zoo's size and budget, zookeepers earn between $20,000-$35,000 a year. Curators' salaries start around $35,000. For more on pandas, see p. 8.
