PAM MURPHY, DOLORES HOPE CLASS ACTS.

Byline: DENNIS McCARTHY Dennis McCarthy may refer to:
  • Dennis McCarthy (composer), (born 1945), an American composer
  • Dennis McCarthy (congressman), (19th century) Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1885
  • Dennis McCarthy MBE (radio presenter), British radio presenter

Odds and ends from around the Valley:

Kudos to Pam Murphy and Dolores Hope Dolores Hope (born May 27, 1909) is a singer, philanthropist and the widow of legendary actor Bob Hope.

She was born Dolores DeFina on May 27, 1909 in New York City and raised in the Bronx. She is of Italian and Irish descent.

``No one has done more to lift the spirits and morale of veterans at that facility than Pam Murphy,'' said Walter Swanson, vice commander of the post.

``The amazing thing is I don't think she realizes just how respected and loved she is.''

Swanson's right - she doesn't. I've seen the look on the faces of old vets when this shy, unassuming woman takes their hand, and helps them cut through the red tape they often have to go through to see a doctor.

I've seen them tear up when they realize she's Audie Murphy's widow.

You ask her to take a public bow for those 30 years, and she tells you to get lost. She's not the story, Pam says - the vets are.

``They're the ones who fought for this country, not me. Go talk to them,'' she said.

I do, Pam, and they talk about you.

The roses you received last Saturday from the VFW Auxiliary and the beautiful plaque from the VFW state commander are just tokens of the gratitude we all owe you for taking such great care of our vets.

The same quiet class and dignity applies to Bob Hope's widow, Dolores Dolores (or Delores) was a common given name (until the 1960s in the USA); it is cognate with the English word "dolorous" (meaning sorrowful) and equivalent in meaning. . Her dedication to this nation's veterans is well-chronicled, but this next story isn't.

While getting ready to graduate from Valley College, nursing student Joe Empleo noticed that many of his classmates Classmates can refer to either:
  • Classmates.com, a social networking website.
  • Classmates (film), a 2006 Malayalam blockbuster directed by Lal Jose, starring Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Indragith, Sunil, Jagathy, Kavya Madhavan, Balachandra Menon, ...
weren't planning to attend the graduation banquet and special pinning program.

``Joe learned that many of them just couldn't afford it, so he asked me if it was OK for him to ask Mrs. Hope to possibly sponsor the banquet so all the students could attend,'' said Raul Castillo, director of the college's patrons association.

Empleo has done some work for the Hopes as a private nurse. Castillo said go for it.

A week later, a check arrived in the mail from Dolores Hope for $5,400 - enough for every nursing graduate from Valley College to attend their class banquet and pinning ceremony A pinning ceremony is a symbolic welcoming of newly-graduated nurses into the nursing profession. The new nurses are presented with nursing pins by the faculty of the nursing school. Often the nurses recite the Nightingale Pledge. .

A lot of readers wanted to know how the last service went Sunday at the tiny Baptist church in Topanga Canyon, which was closing after more than 50 years because of dwindling dwin·dle

 attendance.

Last Sunday, the Rev. Floyd Darling, 83, preached his final sermon to a standing-room-only crowd.

``You couldn't get a seat in the little church, it was so crowded, so most of us stood in the back,'' said Mary Paterson, who had read my Feb. 22 column and decided to attend the last service.

Darling said he was deeply touched by the outpouring of love from former members who came back to say goodbye, and strangers who wanted to find out something Darling wouldn't tell me in the column.

What his last sermon, ``Going Nowhere in a Hurry,'' was about.

``Everybody's going somewhere in a hurry these days, but it doesn't mean they have a sense of direction,'' Darling said. ``They're just on the move.

``There's a big difference between movement and direction,'' he said. ``That's what I talked about - direction.''

Joe Reale called Wednesday to say he enjoyed the column on his old friend, barber Joe Nozzi, retiring after 67 years. He also wanted to introduce me to the new owner of Joe's old shop - himself.

Reale's been barbering in the Valley for 46 years, and wants everyone to know that Barbershop Joe's will still be open for business at 20433 Sherman Way in Canoga Park after his pal Joe Nozzi retires on April 3.

And finally, the public is invited to march in the second annual St. Patrick's St. Patrick's or Saint Patrick's may refer to:
