PALMDALE Palmdale, city (1990 pop. 68,842), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the irrigated Antelope Valley; a growing residential suburb of Los Angeles near Little Rock Creek where it forms Lake Palmdale Reservoir, inc. 1962. -- The city plans to turn again to Fiesta Floats and Raul Rodriguez Rodriguez or Rodrigues (rōdrē`gəs), island (1996 est. pop. 34,883), 42 sq mi (109 sq km), in the Indian Ocean, c.350 mi (560 km) E of Mauritius, of which it is a dependency. for the design and construction of its second entry in the Tournament of Roses parade The Tournament of Roses Parade was established, and first held, on January 1,1890, in Pasadena, California, eight miles (13 km) northeast of Downtown Los Angeles. Rooted in tradition, this parade is broadcast on multiple television networks, watched by upwards of one . The City Council is expected Wednesday Wednesday: see week. to approve a $150,000 contract with Fiesta Floats. A city committee has already begun discussions with float designer Rodriguez on a design for its 2007 float, which is expected to be unveiled in mid-September. The floats help the city by generating a positive buzz in the media as well as building community pride. The floats also can help dispel false perceptions about the city, officials said. ``This is our chance to bring some reality to the discussion,'' Mayor Jim Ledford said. ``We are a desirable place to live. We have a high degree of pride. A float helps us reinforce that.'' The theme of the 2007 parade is ``Our Good Nature,'' which can be taken to mean Mother Nature or people's good-hearted nature or a combination of both. The float will be the same size as this year's float -- 35 feet long and 21 feet high, said City Administrator Laura Biery, who is overseeing the project. The city will be looking to increase the private donations for the project, Biery said. Last year, donors provided about $80,000 in cash and in-kind services. The city is aiming to increase that amount to $90,000. The donations were used to support the volunteers, who numbered well over 600. That support included underwriting Underwriting 1. City officials envision the parade as a yearly tradition for Palmdale with future floats being entirely underwritten by donations. The city's 2006 entry, ``A Magical Place to Call Home,'' won the Princess Trophy, which goes to the most beautiful float 35 feet in length or less. In addition to generating some pride for Palmdale residents, officials said the float generated a great deal of publicity for the city. Media coverage included more than 20 newspaper articles about the float prior to the parade, television coverage from seven Los Angeles-based news stations, and coverage from two cable channels. james.skeen(at)dailynews (661) 267-5743 |
