PALMDALE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL LEAVES POST TO FIGHT ILLNESS.

Battling a rare form of brain cancer, longtime Tumbleweed tumbleweed, any of several plants, particularly abundant in prairie and steppe regions, that commonly break from their roots at maturity and, drying into a rounded tangle of light, stiff branches, roll before the wind, covering long distances and scattering seed as  School principal and Palmdale historian Fred Strasburg has taken a leave from his job.

``Because of the treatments that Fred is undergoing, he hasn't been able to work full time, so we made a co-principalship there,'' said Superintendent Nancy Smith. ``It will be up to Fred and his doctor to determine when he can come back.''

Tamarisk Assistant Principal Linda Wagner has been named interim principal at Tamarisk.

Strasburg, who has been with the district for 27 years and has served as principal at Tumbleweed since 1980, has been undergoing chemotherapy and drug treatments. He has been out for several months on sick leave.

``He is such a great person and has done so many great things,'' Smith said. ``Hopefully he will conquer this.''

Strasburg is married and has a grown son and daughter. He donated his collection of old newspapers, more than 200 maps, 250 to 300 books and more than 150 photographs to the city library last year.
