The city received three awards from the association's High Desert Branch for the council chamber cablecasting and webcasting project, the Marie Kerr Park amphitheater project, and for the Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center project. ``We are very pleased to have been recognized by our peers in the public works profession,'' said Leon Swain, Palmdale's director of public works. ``This really exemplifies the quality of work that the department is doing.'' The Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center project was recognized by the APWA's Southern California Chapter as the ``Facilities and Buildings Project of the Year.'' The High Desert Branch named the center the ``Best Environmental Project of the Year.'' The Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center, located at the Palmdale Landfill at 1200 W. City Ranch Road, was opened in August. The center provides Antelope Valley residents with a place to drop off electronic waste and household hazardous waste without having to waiting for an occasional ``roundup.'' The $1.8 million amphitheater, which opened this summer, is part of a $43 million project funded by a special assessment to create an expanded Marie Kerr Park and the new Oasis Park on the east side. The High Desert Branch of APWA gave the city its ``Best Use of Technology'' award for the city's cablecasting and webcasting of City Council meetings. The city started cablecasting its meetings in February and then followed up with webcasts in October. The city's Avenue R traffic-signal interconnect project received the APWA Southern California Chapter's ``Traffic Congestion/Mitigation Project of the Year'' award. The project involved installing 3.5 miles of video detection and fiber-optic communication lines to connect traffic signals along Avenue R between Fifth Street East and 40th Street East.
