Beattie, who has lived in Palmdale since 1985 and has owned the Palmdale Midas muffler shop since 1986, received the award Tuesday in Sacramento at the California Chamber's 12th Annual Small Business Legislative Conference in Sacramento. ``It's a real honor As a verb, to accept a bill of exchange, or to pay a note, check, or accepted bill, at maturity. As you can imagine, there are chambers all over the state.'' David Kilby, vice president of the California Chamber, said the task force that chose the honorees noted Beattie's involvement in the community, including his efforts in downtown revitalization re·vi·tal·ize tr.v. re·vi·tal·ized, re·vi·tal·iz·ing, re·vi·tal·iz·es To impart new life or vigor to: plans to revitalize inner-city neighborhoods; tried to revitalize a flagging economy. and public safety issues. ``All of the things that were in the application from the Palmdale Chamber were impressive,'' Kilby said. ``His efforts on downtown revitalization and public safety were certainly things that were mentioned.'' Beattie is chairman of the city's Mobilehome Rent Review Board and pushed city officials to create the downtown revitalization committee. He made his fourth bid for a council seat in November 1997. At the Palmdale Chamber, Beattie is vice president of legislative and governmental affairs. He had been the legislative chairman for the last two years, and this year was appointed vice president. His work includes reviewing pending legislation on the state and national level to determine whether the chamber should support or oppose it, and setting up monthly meetings, called Hot Topics and Toast, between Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford and area business owners. The chamber also holds a monthly legislative meeting where members review and comment on Palmdale City Council agenda items, Beattie said. ``What's happened is many chambers have refocused their energies to concentrate on issues that impact businesses and make business owners' positions known to government at the local, state and federal level so legislators are not operating in a vacuum,'' Beattie said.
