Canyon Country's Golden Valley High School placed 12th in the competition, with a score of 35,817, and Saugus High was 23rd, with a score of 30,152. "It's amazing we did so well considering we are still a new school," Golden Valley's decathlon coach Dana Bobek said Friday. The former decathlon coach for Saugus High, Bobek knows what it takes to make a decathlon team a winner. "We meet during Period One every day, at 6:50 a.m., and also on weekends and after school," she said. "We literally cover hundreds of folders of material and take hundreds of quizzes to review." This year's decathlon theme was China, and it was woven into all 10 areas covered in the academic competition -- math, economics, social sciences, art, music, language, literature, speech, interviews and the Super Quiz. Academic Decathlon teams are made up of a diverse group of students, as rules require those with A, B and C averages to participate. Bobek, who asks students to apply and turn in essays or quizzes for a spot on the team, thinks the mix helps the students find their strengths and weaknesses. "An A student is used to the grind of learning a lot of material and testing well, but a C student may be naturally bright but unmotivated. "We really built a great team and, in the last few weeks, they became like a family," Del Rio said.
