PAIR CHARGED IN CHILD'S DEATH.

Byline: Jesse Hiestand Daily News Staff Writer

A Pacoima couple whose daughter was found buried last week in a shallow grave was charged Tuesday in connection with the girl's death - the second child of theirs found dead in the forest.

Petra Barrera Ricardo, 34, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that she was an accessory to the murder, prosecutors said.

Her husband, Marco Esquivel Barragon, is set to be arraigned today on a charge of murder, child abuse, assault on a child causing death and inflicting corporal injury on a child, said Deputy District Attorney David Mintz.

Ricardo faces more than 10 years in prison if convicted of aiding in the death of the girl and child endangerment, prosecutors said. Barragon, 34, pleaded not guilty to killing Ernesto. The boy's body was found in the forest after police on patrol in early March spotted Barragon, the boy's aunt Juana Barrera, and three siblings walking from the shallow grave.

Barragon faces up to 50 years to life in prison if convicted of killing the two children, Mintz said. He remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail, prosecutors said.

Juana Barrera, 28, was charged with accessory to murder and assault on a child causing death in connection with Ernesto's death. She has pleaded not guilty.

Police say Barragon had 14 children with Ricardo and her sister Juana Barrera.

Authorities were investigating Ernesto's death when they came across a birth certificate in Tijuana for one of Barragon's children whose whereabouts were unknown. After an extensive search, the body of a girl believed to be Guadalupe Esquivel was found near Lopez Canyon and Kagel Canyon roads Thursday.
