Cleo Goss n. 1. Gorse. of Quartz Hill was the grand prize winner and will receive $125 for her oil painting ``Floral Creation.'' Goss also was featured in the 1996 calendar. She is a computer programmer at Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. and is a self-taught artist. Second place went to Dennis Calaba of Palmdale for his watercolor ``Hi-Vista Church.'' Calaba, the winner of many local awards, received $100. Third place and $75 went to Peter Hatman of Tehachapi for his watercolor ``Rural Tehachapi.'' There were 116 entries in this year's competition. Other winning artworks and artists were: Debra Dickinson, Pearblossom, photo, ``East on Hwy. 138''; Kimberly McBride, Lancaster, photo, ``Leona Valley Blooms''; Pierre Didot, Palmdale, photo, ``100 Years Gone Bye-Bye''; Samuel M. Sato, Quartz Hill, photo, ``Vestige''; Kay Hendrickson, Lancaster, photo, ``Scenic Beauty''; Frances Cole, Lancaster, oil, ``Mojave Depot and Harvey House Restaurant''; Mary Sault, Palmdale, watercolor, ``Palmdale Gas Station Around 1922''; Dean Webb, Lancaster, photo, ``Winter Evening in Randsburg''; and Phyllis J. Girad, Littlerock, photo, ``Christmas in Littlerock.'' The 13 winning works of art will be on display Thursday, May 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Conference Room 4 at Antelope Valley Hospital. The 1997 calendar will be published this summer and put on sale in the fall. Funds raised from calendar sales will be donated to the Gift Foundation of Antelope Valley Hospital for various programs and community outreach projects. LANCASTER - Antelope Valley Special Olympic competitor Debbie Freeny won first place in advanced singles competition and first place in mixed doubles with teammate Don Roper at the Ventura County Special Olympics First Annual Tennis Tournament. Freeny also captured the special skills contest with a first place score of 366 points, which comprise some seven different skill technique divisions, according to Advanced Tennis Coach Jerry Vick. Don Roper was a close second with 336 points. Freeny is also the 1989 and 1991 California state champ.
