Maintenance crews will be making the most of the weeklong spring break by checking off a few tasks on the 60-year-old campus's hefty to-do list, district officials said.

"We have a specific list of work to do at Hart," said Rob Gapper, the Hart Union High School District's chief operations officer. "We are working to knock things off that list as quickly as we can."

A major renovation project at Hart was next on the district's list of modernization work, but skyrocketing construction costs and cost overruns put all such upgrades on hold.

Some residents fear that the district will complete only cosmetic repairs, but Gapper said the work scheduled this week at Hart was just the beginning.

District officials plan an in-depth presentation at the April 18 school board meeting to review modernization plans at Hart and at Placerita and Sierra Vista junior highs.

"Then we will be able to talk about Castaic High School and the modernization of three important schools in our district," Gapper said.

Water-damaged ceiling tiles in the library will be repaired, and tiles in the boys' locker room and coaches' offices also are being replaced, Gapper added.
