PAINFUL PRICE FOR VICTORY MOORPARK OVERCOMES INJURIES TO HOLD OFF SIMI VALLEY MOORPARK 36, SIMI VALLEY 34.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

MOORPARK -Moorpark High might have a hard time getting over its most inspired win of the season.

But by the time all the injuries from Friday's intensely physical game are fully evaluated, Moorpark (4-3, 3-1) might have a hard time closing the deal.

A week after losing two-way starter Daniel Moran (running back/strong safety) to a knee injury, four starters went down in Friday's game.

Running back Daniel Wolverton, who rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns, including a 95-yarder, left the game late in the fourth quarter after aggravating a sternum sternum: see rib.  injury he suffered earlier in the season. He appeared to be OK.

``I just think it was a physical game. We're a little beat up. I think it took a toll on both teams, and we're just going to have to work hard to recover.''

Nevertheless, Moorpark had a thrilling victory to celebrate.

Moorpark hung on despite Simi Valley quarterback Robbie Fierro driving his team 65 yards on three plays with 19.7 seconds left, highlighted by a screen pass that Devin Kelley turned into a 42-yard touchdown.

Fierro was 30 for 43 for 511 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Simi Valley (3-4, 1-3) stunned Moorpark by jumping out to a 14-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game when Fierro hooked up with Tony Washington on 71- and 67-yard touchdown passes.

Meadows intercepted Fierro at the 50 with just more than a minute remaining in the half and took the ball to the Simi Valley 20. A personal foul on Simi Valleys took the ball to the 10, where Blum found an open Andy Moger on the right sideline, and Moger took the ball into the end zone on the drive's only play to make it 21-14.

``We showed fight,'' Kelley said. ``People sit there and downgrade Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. Basically, it's a new era coming up, and next year we're coming up even stronger.''
