I want to create a Web page for my company and for myself. The service I use will provide me with the site location as part of my membership fee. I just found out, however, that I have to learn HTML HTML
 in full HyperText Markup Language

Markup language derived from SGML that is used to prepare hypertext documents. Relatively easy for nonprogrammers to master, HTML is the language used for documents on the World Wide Web.
or hire a programmer to create a Web page. Can't I use my computer to do this?

Adobe's new PageMill lets you design a sophisticated Web page in minutes.

Hypertext markup language (hypertext, World-Wide Web, standard) Hypertext Markup Language - (HTML) A hypertext document format used on the World-Wide Web. HTML is built on top of SGML. "Tags" are embedded in the text. A tag consists of a "<", a "directive" (in lower case), zero or more parameters and a ">".  (HTML) consists of instructions that define the layout of a Web page. A Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you.  is a program that lets you view these Web pages on the Internet. The Web browser accomplishes this by converting the plain HTML instructions into a visually pleasing graphic display - and it's these pleasing displays on the Internet's World Wide Web, called Web pages, that are proving to be the most popular new way for companies and individuals to display information.

Learning the complex HTML codes and placing them in the proper order is tantamount tan·ta·mount

to computer programming. Learning HTML can be fairly complex and has led to the formation of many new companies that specialize in developing Web pages.

But with PageMill, you can create your own Web page, complete with photographic images, graphics, colored text, hyperlinks and even sound - without knowing anything about HTML or programming.

When you run PageMill, you are given a work area similar to one of today's graphically oriented word-processing programs.

Simply type in the text you want and select the styles, including color, size and font. If you have graphics, cut and paste To move an object from one location to another. When the operation is complete, there is nothing left in the original location. It may refer to relocating files from one folder to another or to relocating selected text or images from one document to another.  them into the document, dragging and dropping these images anywhere on the page. Any work you've done from most other applications, such as word-processing, paint and drawing programs, can also be pasted into PageMill's display.

thing is that PageMill is automatically creating the HTML code as you continue to add elements. You never even see the code, unless you use another word-processing program to open the PageMill document. This is a nice touch, since accomplished HTML programmers will find PageMill to be a time saver. They can visually create a Web page and use a word processor to manually fine-tune the raw HTML code.

Additional features let you instantly add check boxes that display an "X" when selected by the mouse, as well as other functional items that include submit and reset buttons A computer button or key that reboots the computer. All current activities are stopped cold, and any data in memory (RAM) is lost. On a printer, the reset button clears the printer's memory and readies it to accept new data. , password fields and pop-up menus.

PageMill has dual modes: In Edit, you can add or modify items. Graphics can be stretched or compressed, and text can be corrected. Preview lets you see if everything works. For example, you can click on pop-up menus and check boxes to see if they display the correct information. If they don't, simply select Edit and make corrections.

Given that programmers charge $25 an hour and up, PageMill, at $99, should easily pay for itself. And if you decide to change something later, you'll save the reprogramming Reprogramming refers to erasure and remodeling of epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation, during mammalian development[1]. Keep in mind, though, that drafting tools do not an architect make. You may want to turn to a Web developer for more sophisticated designs, as well as for help in marketing.

PageMill is available for Macintosh. A Windows version is promised for mid-1996.
