PACOIMA BRANCH WELCOMES ITS FIRST LATINO POSTMASTER.

Albert Prado began his first day as postmaster postmaster - The electronic mail contact and maintenance person at a site connected to the Internet or UUCPNET. The Internet standard for electronic mail (RFC 822) requires each machine to have a "postmaster" address; usually it is  of the post office in Pacoima on Thursday, pledging to provide the best service possible.

Prado, 45, is the first Latino to serve as postmaster in Pacoima, said postal officials.

``It's significant because the community needs someone to identify with,'' said Prado, an 18-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) processes and delivers mail to individuals and businesses within the United States. The service seeks to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and operates its own planning and engineering programs. . ``We're bilingual and we're able to help and serve the community, which is the No. 1 goal.

``Today is an important day because it's a big promotion and a big step for me to be in charge. I've obtained a goal,'' he said.

Prado previously was manager of customer services at the North Hills facility.

As postmaster, Prado will oversee the delivery of mail to 21,800 homes and Pacoima's 120,000 residents. He also will be managing a $4 million budget and 80 employees.

Rachel Stringer, a Pacoima resident and a 10-year employee of the area's post office, said she was very happy to welcome Prado as her boss.

``I think it represents the changes in this community,'' said Stringer, who organized the ceremony and reception event.

``Al is one of the hardest workers I know,'' said Bill Almarez, senior plant manager at the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987.
