PACIFIC BELL TO TEST SIEMENS STROMBERG-CARLSON EWSM CELL SWITCHING SYSTEM IN SMDS APPLICATIONS

PACIFIC BELL TO TEST SIEMENS STROMBERG-CARLSON EWSM CELL SWITCHING SYSTEM
 IN SMDS APPLICATIONS
CHICAGO, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Pacific Bell will begin a Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) technology trial using Siemens Stromberg-Carlson's EWSM cell switching system.
The trial will take place at Pacific Bell's San Ramon, Calif., laboratory facilities, beginning in the second quarter of 1992. During the course of the trial, Pacific Bell will test and evaluate full LAN-to-LAN (Local Area Network) communications across an SMDS network.
"Our EWSM cell switching technology allows carriers to interconnect LANs now, capturing today's fastest growing business opportunities," said Anton Hasholzner, president and CEO, Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. "They can operate the EWSM system over fiber they already have in place, without any upgrades to their switched network."
The EWSM cell switching system uses cell-relay technology, which will readily evolve into the broadband networks of the future. It provides high-speed data communications networks for interconnecting LANs, host computers, and high performance workstations for a wide range of applications such as joint editing, distance learning and medical imaging.
Siemens Stromberg-Carlson provides telephone operating companies with advanced, high-quality public telecommunication networks. The company designs, develops and manufactures central office digital switching systems, packet switching systems and transmission equipment. Based in Boca Raton, Fla., the company has manufacturing and other functional groups in Lake Mary, Fla., and Albuquerque, N.M. Siemens Stromberg-Carlson is the third-largest equipment supplier to the U.S. public telecommunications networks.

Bell Atlantic Bell Atlantic named Siemens Stromberg-Carlson its
exclusive EWSM supplier for Switched Multimegabit
Data Service (SMDS). EWSM cell switching systems
have already been installed at various sites
throughout Bell Atlantic territory, and the company
 has annouh?at the General Services
Administration in Philadelphia has become the first
organization in the country to purchase public
 SMDS service.
MCI MCI selected Siemens Stromberg-Carlson's EWSM
cell switching system to support its nationwide
 cell-based network platform. Initially, the
platform will support MCI's frame relay service,
and will be the basis for future ATM-based wideband
 and broadband services.
Ameritech Ameritech will engage in the first Chicago area
SMDS trial based on EWSM cell switching systems.
During the first segment of the trial, Siemens
Stromberg-Carlson and Ameritech will work with
CICnet, Inc. to enable the University of Illinois-
Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory and the
University of Chicago to access Internet, the
 global data network, via SMDS.
Southwestern Southwestern Bell announced that it will perform
Bell laboratory trial the EWSM cell switching system,
beginning this month. The trial will explore
emerging customer applications such as medical
imaging, videoconferencing, SMDS, Frame Relay and
 LAN interconnection.
Pacific Bell Pacific Bell will test the EWSM cell switching
system in SMDS applications during a technology
trial at Pacific Bell's San Ramon, Calif.,
laboratory facilities. This technology trial will
test and evaluate full LAN-to-LAN communications
 across an SMDS network.
