P&O Cold Logistics Implements Cross-Dock Operation for Major Retailer Using Delfour's SmartFreight.

DALLAS -- P&O Cold Logistics, a long-time user of Delfour Corporation's WarehouseLogic warehouse management system (WMS), has implemented a powerful cross-dock procedure at its Dallas facility for a major national retail chain with Delfour's SmartFreight transportation management system (TMS) as the software platform; it was announced today by P&O Systems Manager Bill Jenkins and Delfour President Joe E. Couto. The project started in April 2004 and went live in late May, Jenkins said.

A companion product that integrates seamlessly with the SmartEnterprise logistics management suite, SmartFreight is a fully featured modular solution for controlling and tracking the flow and distribution of goods on the road, in the yard, on the dock and in the warehouse.

"Our customer presented us with a set of complex and demanding requirements, and SmartFreight provided us with all of the tools we needed to accommodate them," Jenkins said. "When we went live with the new procedure in May, we were impressed with the smoothness of the process and with the power and flexibility we were able to extract from the system."

At the Dallas facility, SmartFreight uses the retailer's purchase order to manage the receipt of the retailer's cross-dock orders for goods from various vendors and other distribution centers, and to merge arriving product with merchandise stored on-site. Incoming shipments are designated as generic cross-dock product without specific item codes, but with lot numbers that contain the purchase order number, Jenkins said.

SmartFreight manages the building and routing of the loads as well as the exchange of the relevant electronic data interchange (EDI) document sets: EDI 204 (the Supplier Load Tender), EDI 990 (the Response to a Load Tender) and EDI 214 (the Transportation Carrier Shipment Status Message). All EDI traffic is exchanged using AS2 over the Internet.

SmartFreight routes the combined loads and transmits an EDI 204 document to the retailer, which indicates acceptance of the load with an EDI 990 document. On acceptance, SmartFreight schedules the shipment and sends an EDI 214 document indicating the time and date of the pickup and the delivery schedule. When the goods arrive at the distribution center, P&O sends an additional EDI 214 providing detailed delivery information.
