P&G EXPANDS PRESENCE IN CHINA WITH THREE NEW JOINT VENTURES

CINCINNATI, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG) today announced that it signed agreements to establish three new joint ventures in China. Two of the joint ventures will be in the laundry and cleaning products categories, and the third in the personal cleansing products business in China.
The laundry and cleaning products joint ventures will be established with Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., a Hong Kong-based company which is a partner in P&G's other businesses in China, and two leading state-owned laundry and cleaning factories. One agreement will cover the Beijing No. 2 Daily Use Chemical Factory and the second will cover the Chengdu (Sichuan province) Synthetic Detergent Factory.
Under the agreement, the joint ventures will take over the existing laundry product facilities of the two factories and the current laundry brands of the two Chinese partners. These brands have leadership shares in their home provinces, P&G said.
The personal cleansing joint venture will be established in partnership with Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. and the state-owned Tianjin Toilet Soap Factory located in Tianjin, northern China. This joint venture will take over some toilet soap production facilities at that factory. The factory has been producing Safeguard bar soap for P&G for 18 months.
"We continue to see excellent profit potential in China, and these newest agreements underscore our confidence in this fast-growing market," said John E. Pepper, president of P&G.
P&G began in China with a health and beauty care joint venture in Guangzhou (Guangdong province), southern China in 1988. P&G currently manufactures and markets broadly across China several shampoo brands (Rejoice, Pantene, Head & Shoulders), a feminine hygiene brand, Whisper, a skin care brand, Oil of Ulan, a laundry detergent brand, Ariel, and a bar soap brand, Safeguard.
P&G worldwide had sales of $30.4 billion in 1992-93. The company makes and markets a wide range of products for both consumer and institutional use, has on-the-ground operations in more than 50 countries and sells its products in more than 140 countries.
