Owls block Waddle move.

By JOHN EDWARDS

CHRIS WADDLE was left stunned last night after having a dream return home turned down by Sheffield Wednesday.

The Wednesday winger put on a brave face after learning that a pounds 500,000 Newcastle bid had been rejected.

But he was clearly unhappy at being denied the chance to end his glittering career with a fairytale move back to St James's Park.

Wednesday boss David Pleat confirmed that the runaway Premiership leaders wanted Waddle to offset the loss of David Ginola, who's about to serve a three-match ban, and the injured Keith Gillespie.

That would have handed the 36-year-old Geordie a opportunity to go back to the North- East in a blaze of glory and help guide Newcastle to the title.

But Pleat is unlikely to budge unless Newcastle raise the stakes to close on pounds 1m.
