overwhelmingly rejecting the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment The Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) (also known as the Marriage Protection Amendment) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution which would define marriage in the United States as a union of one man and one woman. that
would have amended the U.S. Constitution to deny marriage protections to
same-sex couples A same-sex couple is a pair of people of the same gender who pursue a romantic or sexual relationship together.
The term "same-sex relationship" may be used when the sexual orientation of participants in a same-sex relationship is not known. and their children. Congress rejected a similar
amendment proposal in 2004.
