Overlooking Asian sexploitation.

I had the opportunity to read your article "Playing with Race" (Winter 2004-05). Thank you for writing such an interesting article, one that I found myself thinking about quite a bit. It was certainly a topic that I was not very aware of, nor thought much about, but I felt the piece presented the "players" humanistically, whereas someone else could have easily sensationalized their activities. All that said, I do have one comment. Near the end of the article, you discuss the problematic conflation (database) conflation - Combining or blending of two or more versions of a text; confusion or mixing up. Conflation algorithms are used in databases.  of race play and race fetishes. Though you mention the example of "white men flying to Havana for morena prostitutes," you overlooked an analogous example of (predominantly white) men flying to Southeast Asia Southeast Asia, region of Asia (1990 est. pop. 442,500,000), c.1,740,000 sq mi (4,506,600 sq km), bounded roughly by the Indian subcontinent on the west, China on the north, and the Pacific Ocean on the east.  (e.g., Thailand, Vietnam) with the express purpose of patronizing the "Me Love You Long Time" prostitute. You neglected to mention issues of sex and race fetishes with respect to Asians. There are many men who marry "mail-order" Asian brides, many of whom enter an unbalanced "marriage" upon their arrival in the U.S. Enter the words "Asian women" in Google and a plethora of interracial in·ter·ra·cial

  • 1956 - Dalip Singh Saund became the first Asian immigrant elected to the U.S. Congress upon his election to the House of Representatives.
  • 1959 - Hiram Fong became the first Asian American elected to the U.S. Senate.
, and I am being honest when I say that your article was the first time I had ever heard of "morena prostitutes," though the practice surprises me little. I mention this because there may be other readers who know little or nothing of "morena prostitutes," AND they may also be unaware of issues of sex and race for Asians and Asian Americans.
