Overland Data to show industry firsts at COMDEX/Fall.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1995--Overland Data Inc., a leading manufacturer of data interchange, backup and automation solutions, will show four new high-performance storage solutions, three of which are industry firsts, at COMDEX/Fall at the Alexis Park Resort, Suite 2317.

Overland Data will preview a radical new automated tape library technology that delivers capacity, performance and expandability far beyond traditional tape library designs. The new Digital Linear Tape-based LibraryXpress(tm) is unlike any tape library design that the data storage market has ever seen. LibraryXpress is built on a new modular architecture that provides a flexible design allowing customers to satisfy their storage automation needs well into the future while protecting their initial library hardware investment. For example, if the customer's data set is growing quickly and they simply want to expand the available near-line capacity of the library, they can add a capacity module without incurring the expense of replacing their entire system. Similarly, if throughput is an issue, the customer can easily add a performance module to provide faster access to existing capacity.

With this exclusive SmartScale Storage(tm) design, Overland Data has developed an advanced data automation solution that allows customers to scale a library solution as their needs demand up to 3.2 terabytes native with a sustained throughput of over 85 gigabytes per hour, making it ideal for even the most robust network backup and Hierarchical Storage Management See HSM.  (HSM (1) (Hierarchical Storage Management) The automatic movement of files from hard disk to slower, less-expensive storage media. The typical hierarchy is from magnetic disk to optical disc to tape. ) applications.

Overland Data will also show for the first time its new series of value-priced products that offer native storage capacities of up to 105 GBs. The new DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  XT Series is composed of three models, all using the new DLT 2000XT drive technology from Quantum. The DLT XT products offer a lower-cost alternative for customers that do not require the capacity and performance enhancements provided by Overland Data's DLT 4000 Series, while still delivering the advanced data integrity and drive reliability inherent in all DLT units.

Overland Data's newest DLT product line includes the standalone DLT 2000XT and two MiniLibrary(tm) products -- the DLT 2500XT and DLT 2700XT, which are equipped with five- and seven-cartridge loaders respectively. All of these new products offer a native capacity of 15 GBs per cartridge and a sustained data rate of 1.25 MBs per second. On-board IDRC IDRC International Development Research Centre (Canada)

can double the capacity and boost the performance to 9 GBs per hour. Drive throughput is further optimized by a unique adaptive cache feature that dynamically matches the drive and host data rates to virtually eliminate tape repositioning repositioning Laparoscopic surgery The changing of a Pt's position during a procedure to improve access or visualization of the operative field, which may be linked to complications, as it changes anatomic planes of operation. Overland Data will also unveil the newest member of its popular TapeXpress(R) family of Mainframe Class Tape (MCT See Microsoft certification. ) subsystems -- the L60E Data Vault. Its combination of 36-track backup capability, combined with the unique ability to write in an 18-track interchange mode follows in the footsteps of Overland Data's L490E 10-cartridge library. The L60E expands the proven technology of the company's L490E to deliver a high-reliability, higher capacity cost-effective solution that preserves a customer's investment in older media.

The L60E houses 60 cartridges; they may be sequentially or randomly accessed for a native capacity of up to 50 GBs. Additionally, the L60E includes a resident cartridge slot allowing permanent storage of a cleaning cartridge. The L60E connects to numerous hardware platforms Each hardware platform, or CPU family, has a unique machine language. All software presented to the computer for execution must be in the binary coded machine language of that CPU. Following is a list of the major hardware platforms in existence today. See platform.  and easily accommodates many popular backup and Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) packages.

The L60E also delivers true Mainframe Class Tape performance with a sustained data transfer rate of 3 MBs per second and a burst rate of 20 MBs per second with Fast/Wide SCSI SCSI

. With this level of performance, a full 50 GB backup session with the L60E could be completed in less than 4 1/2 hours, making it well-suited for overnight lights out operation.

And, the L60E is supported by leading backup and HSM products, including Cheyenne ARCserve(a), Legato (Legato Systems, Inc., Mountain View, CA, www.legato.com) A leading provider of storage management and high-availability software founded in 1988 and acquired by EMC Corporation in 2003. Also showing at Comdex is the TapeXpress T490E, a single cartridge solution that completes the TapeXpress product family. Offering all the exclusive features of its higher capacity sibling, the T490E is the ideal solution for both 18-track interchange and the ability to read and write 36-track tapes. Its compact size makes it ideal for integrating into the larger tape libraries being built for mass storage.

Known for high performance and reliability, Overland Data has over 15 years of providing business critical tape storage solutions. Today the company manufactures mainframe class data interchange, backup and archival tape solutions. With both leading edge and standard products designed to protect the customer's investment, Overland Data serves end users, distributors and OEMs worldwide.
