Outgoing commissioner has say.

Byline: Randi Bjornstad The Register-Guard

After participating in more than seven hours of interviews with candidates eager to succeed him, former Lane County Commissioner Tom Lininger told the four remaining members of the board on Wednesday that he believes all seven finalists exhibit strengths that would benefit the county.

In a careful display of diplomacy, Lininger did not reveal his favorite, although he seemed most ebullient about the prospects of Oakridge Mayor Don Hampton, followed by Coburg Mayor Mike Dean and former state legislator LEGISLATOR. One who makes laws.

Although allowed the courtesy of participating in the interview process, Lininger will not be involved in the final selection of his successor. However, his former colleagues will consider his views as they deliberate, to ensure that residents of his district receive adequate representation until they directly elect a commissioner next year.

The appointment, to be made by commissioners Bill Dwyer, Bobby Green, Anna Morrison and Peter Sorenson, could come as early as Wednesday.

Lininger won election to the East Lane County seat on the county commission in May 2002 and took the oath of office An oath of office is an oath or affirmation a person takes before undertaking the duties of an office, usually a position in government or within a religious body, although such oaths are sometimes required of officers of other organizations.  in January. All of the finalists - selected from 22 original applicants after each made a 10-minute presentation to the commissioners - displayed some traits that could serve east-county residents well, Lininger told his colleagues.

He gave a quick analysis of the seven in the order of their interviews, finishing with a thumbnail summary of his reactions:

Mike Dean, commercial photographer and mayor of Coburg: Well versed Versed® Midazolam Pharmacology A preoperative sedative  in county and regional issues; has good rapport with people and can balance different points of view; very energetic. "Bright, experienced, a consensus builder."

Don Hampton, retired schoolteacher, rural coordinator for the Lane Business Education Compact and mayor of Oakridge: "Fantastic interview" with responsive, short, specific answers; long service in local, county and regional governments; known throughout the East Lane district; lives in area not well represented on the board for at least two decades. "You can't afford to have anyone different in the East Lane chair. That wouldn't be fair to the board or the district."
