Out of bounds: Amelie Mauresmo, the 24-year-old French lesbian tennis star, spends off-court time with writer Douglas Robson.

You travel all over the world playing tennis tournaments. What are your tips for traveling well? Travel light, first. For things that you are taking with you on the plane, if you have a long flight, take a change of clothes. Dress in layers. Also, I pack at the last minute--always in the morning on the day I'm traveling. It works for me.

Drink a lot of water when you have a long flight, like to Australia or from Europe to California. And no alcohol. Try to not eat too much, or [instead eat] light things, like salad and fruit. And bring books. I like to read Stephen Zweig, [a 19th-century] Austrian writer, and the usual French magazines like Paris Match Paris Match is a French weekly magazine. It's best known for the frequent use of paparazzi photographs. The magazine also covers major national and international news along with celebrity features. Paris Match was founded in 1949 by the industrialist Jean Prouvost. , Premiere, and wine magazines. Also, I always prefer to fly Air France Air France

What are your favorite vacation destinations? Anyplace with sun. Mauritius in the Indian Ocean Indian Ocean, third largest ocean, c.28,350,000 sq mi (73,427,000 sq km), extending from S Asia to Antarctica and from E Africa to SE Australia; it is c.4,000 mi (6,400 km) wide at the equator. It constitutes about 20% of the world's total ocean area. , near the African coast. And the French Caribbean The term French Caribbean varies in meaning with its usage and frame of reference. This ambiguity makes it very different from the term French West Indies, which refers to the specific, formal French possessions in the Caribbean region. , like Guadeloupe. I've always wanted to go to Tahiti.

Any bizarre or frustrating things happen to you on the road? Well, loss of luggage happens sometimes. I always take my rackets rackets

 so I can play.

Last year I missed a flight because I was sleeping in the London airport on my way to Montreal. I woke up and ran to the gate, but it was too late. But I won the tournament in Montreal that year!

What's your least favorite part of traveling? What I hate is that I don't get to see the country and the culture of wherever I go. I just see airports and hotels and tennis clubs. I would love to enjoy the culture of the places I travel.

What do you like best about traveling? We can still see a little of the culture of the countries we visit. Unfortunately, I don't have time for much sightseeing.

Douglas Robson, a San Francisco based sports reporter, managed to lure Amelie Mauresmo (page 40) off the court for some time to talk.
