Our rant on PETA garners rants.I completely disagree with Verb 1. disagree with - not be very easily digestible; "Spicy food disagrees with some people" hurt - give trouble or pain to; "This exercise will hurt your back" the recent "rant" [Winter 2005] about an exhibit promoted by PETA Quadrillion (10 to the 15th power). See space/time. to end oppression of humans and animals. PETA's display simply shows the similarities between past abuses to humans and current abuses to other species. People's oppressive mindsets need to be changed. Other species suffer just as much as humans and deserve to live without suffering. There once was a day when groups of people were considered "below" the rest of society, and consideration of their welfare was considered laughable. Today, we think upon this thought of our ancestors Our Ancestors (Italian: I Nostri Antenati) is the name of Italo Calvino's "heraldic trilogy" that comprises The Cloven Viscount (1952), The Baron in the Trees (1957), and The Nonexistent Knight (1959). as completely unacceptable. But we treat other species the same way today. I'm sure our future generations will look upon our generation's acts toward animals with distaste. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] One of PETA's examples is showing the similarities between how fairly recently in our country we enslave en·slave tr.v. en·slaved, en·slav·ing, en·slaves To make into or as if into a slave. en·slave ment n. Blacks and how we enslave elephants today in circus acts. Elephant are very social creatures that need miles of land to roam. In the circus, they have no companionship companionshipthe faculty possessed by most truly domesticated animals. They are social creatures and have a great need for the companionship of other animals. Animals in groups are quieter and more productive as a rule. , are trapped in cages, and are trained with beatings. The person who made the rant attacking PETA's ad to end oppression perhaps would have been the person in the past who fought against rights for Blacks, women, gays, etc. Sincerely, William McMullin Mt. Morris, MI To your rant about PETA's exhibit to draw attention to the parallel's between man's treatment of animals and other human beings, I must take exception. All who have experienced oppression and abuse must applaud their efforts and thank them for standing up for those who have no voice, as others did for them or those that came before them. Mr. Thompson's comment about a "freaking freak·ing adv. & adj. Slang Used as an intensive: Traffic was a freaking nightmare. [Alteration of frigging, present participle of frig.] " cow is just too similar to the comments that have oppressed op·press tr.v. op·pressed, op·press·ing, op·press·es 1. To keep down by severe and unjust use of force or authority: a people who were oppressed by tyranny. 2. humans, as if the cow has no value as a living being. Sadly, history shows that the oppressed often become the oppressors at the first opportunity, rather than dedicating themselves to the compassion they were denied. Those who resent the exhibit need to get over their initial shock and realize that the same suffering is happening by the billions every year and admit that they are doing nothing to stop it.
