"You never know how the pictures are going to be cropped, but one of the advantages of organizing the event is you can be closer to the center than other people might be," said Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance, which organized the kiss-in. Shortly before the event, which included the unveiling of a commemorative statue, Tompkins sent e-mails to several gay groups soliciting same-sex couples to show up and kiss. Tompkins, whose group also organizes the Times Square New Year's party, said the kiss-in has now become an annual event.
